Arbor Day Tree Planting Honors Vets on April 17 – Volunteers Needed!
April 5th, 2010 by Keith Hutchinson
A special Arbor Day tree planting on Saturday, April 17 will be dedicated to the men and women of Georgetown who have served their country in the armed forces. Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8587 in Georgetown will help plant trees at the event. Volunteers are still needed for this event!

The tree planting is, appropriately, at VFW Park, located at 110 N. College Street near the VFW softball fields. The event starts at 2 p.m. on April 17. Car-pooling is encouraged since parking at VFW Park is limited.

The City’s Park and Recreation Department is sponsoring the tree planting. Event organizer Heather Brewer, the City’s urban forester, says, “Wear your old shoes and bring gloves and a shovel.”

Brewer says volunteers will be planting species of trees that are native and adapted to the Central Texas climate. Holes for the trees will be dug by parks staff before the event. Volunteers are needed to place trees in the holes, backfill the root balls with dirt and mulch, and water the trees. This will be the last public tree planting of the season.

If you plan to attend the tree planting or are organizing a group that will participate, please contact Heather Brewer beforehand at or (512) 930-6113. Brewer would like to know the number of participants planning to attend the event.
